IRD – You’ve got Mail

IRD have been spending up large on a new computer – well over a billion dollars.  It was probably overdue as the previous computer system was based on technology from the late 70’s.  That’s coming up 40 years old…

Part of the new computer system is greater automation, including automated communication – which theoretically is a good thing.  However, no one seems to be in charge of the messages it sends, which isn’t so good.

At this time, we are suggesting not to be too concerned about messages you receive from IRD.  Hopefully IRD will learn to operate their new system better, so the quality of what they produce will improve.

Slightly concerning, IRD are commencing a campaign to email 2.6 million taxpayers about refunds due or tax to pay.  This campaign is due to start very shortly, but it remains to be seen if the massive number of errors will continue.

If you’ve received correspondence from IRD and something seems seriously out of your expectations, then contact us.  Otherwise, until they work the kinks out of the system, you can probably just ignore it.
